Who Is Wellspring of Hope?

We are a counseling agency with offices in the cities of Glen Allen and Lynchburg that provides Clinical Mental Health Counseling as well as Marriage and Family Therapy. We have both PhD and Masters level counselors who are qualified to work with a variety of mental health and relationship issues. It is our desire that each person who comes to Wellspring of Hope will discover and learn the skills necessary to walk in a life free from past struggles. We believe that each person can live a life full of Hope as they create a narrative for their life that will bring peace and contentment.

Our clinical team is a dynamic and diverse group of professionals, each bringing their unique backgrounds, expertise, and perspectives to our counseling practice. Our team is composed of counselors with various specialties, ensuring that we can effectively address a wide range of mental health concerns and challenges faced by our clients. Together, we work collaboratively to guide our clients towards a life filled with hope, resilience, and empowerment.

Dr. Saunders, a marriage therapist with years of expertise, earned his Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision and teaches Human Sexuality at Regent University in the School of Psychology and Counseling. He has worked with couples from diverse populations, including African American, Latino, Caucasian, Asian, African, Middle Eastern, and Caribbean Islanders. Working with couples in conflict and crisis in a manner that supports and affirms the couple and each individual as they strive to repair their relationship and re-ignite the passion and intimacy they desire is the lens through which therapy is viewed. Dr. Saunders worked internationally for 15 years, living in Venezuela and working with families in crisis. Dr. Saunders, along with his wife Dr. Linda P Saunders, have founded Wellspring of Hope Intensives, a marriage-intensive center on 100 acres in the Blue Ridge mountains. They have hosted couples from all walks of life and nations.

This experience and his academic training as a marriage therapist and mental health counselor have prepared him to integrate Spirituality and faith into the counseling sessions. This integration brings evidence-based practices and Faith together, affirming the couple or individual in their faith while bringing them to a place of healing and hope. Dr. Saunders is uniquely equipped to integrate Christian counseling with evidence-based practices as he is professionally trained academically and experientially. He employs a conflict resolution and restoration couples counseling model integrated with evidence-based hope-focused therapy. ​Every person, individually and as a couple, will have struggles at times. Having someone who can help guide you through these times in a manner that regards and affirms the struggles is extremely beneficial. Dr. Saunders will compassionately walk with you through the current struggle that you are in and help you use new skills that will bring hope and healing.

Dr. Saunders enjoys working internationally with program development as well as delivering marriage counseling. His current work is in India, Vietnam, and South America. Dr. Saunders is also active in multiple counseling associations, sitting on the board of the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors and the Governing Council of the American Counseling Association.

Amber provides counseling in both group and individual settings. Her focus is on clients recovering from substance use disorder and trauma. Amber also works with clients striving to overcome depression and anxiety. Amber embraces a collaborative approach, and she works closely with her clients to reach their goals in counseling. Amber uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients gain insights into their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Amber is also fluent in Mandarin and can provide services in Mandarin.

Sarah is a graduate student pursuing her M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University. She is passionate about walking alongside clients in their journey toward healing and growth. With a background in psychology from the University of Florida and a heart for helping others, Sarah brings a blend of clinical knowledge, real-world experience, and genuine empathy into every session.

Sarah is often described as personable, genuine, and grounded in positivity—qualities she brings into the counseling space to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. She has had the opportunity to work one-on-one with neurodivergent individuals in outpatient therapy, serve as a facilitator in academic, community, and faith-based groups, and support clients behind the scenes at a counseling practice—all experiences that shaped her relational, client-centered approach.

Sarah works with a wide range of populations and concerns and holds particular interest in exploring anxiety, OCD, sexuality, culture, neurodivergence, religious trauma, identity exploration, and family-of-origin dynamics with her clients. She sees children, teens, and adults. Rather than rigidly adhering to a single counseling theory, she draws inspiration from postmodern approaches that value collaboration, meaning-making, and the power of storytelling.

More than anything, Sarah believes that authentic, compassionate relationships are just as healing as any technique or tool.

Tyrel is a counseling intern here at Wellspring of Hope Counseling, working under the supervision of Dr. Mark A Saunders Sr. He is currently working towards his master's degree in mental health counseling, with a graduation date planned for May of 2026. He grew up in a small town with a population of less than 2,000 people located in south-west Washington state and has a passion to help people. Tyrel is genuine, curious, supportive, and understanding. Tyrel has been studying psychology for the past 6 years and is interested in working with people from all walks of life experiencing a multitude of problems. I look forward to meeting you and walking with you as you create a life that is more stable, adjusted, and enjoyable.

Deniquah is an intern counselor and a board-approved Certified Substance Abuse Counselor-Supervisee and Mental Health Professional, with years of experience in the mental health field. She brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to each therapeutic relationship.

Her journey began with a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, laying the foundation for her career. Currently, Deniquah is pursuing a Master’s degree in Marital and Family Therapy at Regent University, further honing her skills to better serve clients like you.

Deniquah brings years of experience working with individuals struggling with substance abuse, particularly drug and alcohol addiction. Her background also includes supporting individuals diagnosed with anxiety and depression, adults in crisis, children with mental health disorders, and families navigating difficult situations.

She believes that every client is the expert of their own experiences and values a collaborative approach—guiding clients as they work through challenges and pursue personal growth.

Her approach integrates person-centered therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), narrative therapy, solution-focused strategies, and faith-based counseling. Each session is tailored to meet the client’s unique needs, strengths, and values.

Mietta is a Resident Counselor with over a decade of experience working in the mental health field. She brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to the therapeutic relationship.

Her journey began at Michigan State University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Human Development, laying the foundation for her career. Mietta later earned a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health from Messiah University, further refining her skills to better serve clients like you.

Mietta’s goal is to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where you feel empowered to open up, explore, and create positive changes in your life. She believes that you are the expert on your own experiences, and her role is to be a caring, objective ally—guiding you through challenges and helping you reach your goals.

Together, you’ll work collaboratively to tailor the therapeutic process to your unique needs, strengths, and circumstances, fostering personal growth and well-being.

Julie Graham is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia with over 6 years of experience supporting individuals facing challenges during major life transitions. She earned her Master’s degree in Professional Counseling in 2019 from Liberty University. Additionally, Julie holds a Master’s degree in Adult Education from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, earned in 1999.

With a professional background in Organizational Development spanning over 25 years, Julie brings a systematic and solution-focused lens to her counseling sessions. This experience uniquely equips her to guide clients through a wide range of emotional and psychological concerns across various life stages.

Julie offers person-centered, trauma-informed care that is tailored to each client’s unique needs and experiences. She works with adults, adolescents (14+), and elders navigating issues such as complex trauma, PTSD, ADHD, depression, anxiety, anger, grief, life stressors, and interpersonal conflicts.

She utilizes a variety of evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), and Narrative Therapy to foster resilience, clarity, and positive change.
